Several LEO families braved the early-season snowfall to
attend the Go-Kart outing on September 7th. The entire Nagler and Cummings
families were represented, as were offspring of Dom Giangrasso (son Phil). Also
joining us was new LEO recruit Stewart Abbot of Martinsville.
Much to our pleasure the Funplex had all new electric karts
in service. They seemed to have a lot more grunt than the old ones. They sure
did oversteer though…too much speed and the tail would break away very readily.
Never mind attempting trail-braking…it just wasn't going to work unless you
slowed in a straight line.
No problem for our intrepid club members. After much
discussion of the racing line and the wisdom of not using the brakes at all, it
became apparent that the new karts were more evenly matched than the old
ones. Oh sure, you could still get one
that was slow or that had a soft tire, and the lightweights among us (Jim's son
Ian) had the power to weight advantage, but over the four to six runs we took,
no one really had a clear-cut advantage.
David found that his attempts to "cheat" by
stretching the throttle cable were thwarted by the new kart's design, but at
least this trip his power wasn't cut for aggressive driving! He and Jim were
the class of the field as usual. Well maybe not, there was a lot of Trash
Talking going on, but it was an excellent time just the same!
One nice thing was that it was less crowded than usual so we
didn't have to wait between runs. Afterwards we all made up for the
"bumpin' and rubbin'" at a close-by restaurant. What a great day!
