Fall Drive

Our luck almost ran out on us this November 14. Mother Nature decided to drop a smattering of the white stuff early (as in, the Friday before) and the Road Departments responded in kind by dropping their own kind of white stuff, in the form of salt and cinders. Luckily it wasn't much, just a bit on the bridges and intersections. But coupled with the cold weather we had our thrills.

At the start it was really nice to see some new faces (Dante Buonocore, Steve Worthing and his new friend Susan, Mike and Craig Colavito). New cars too…the LEO debut of David Nagler's Elise GP (Great Pumpkin) plus Dante's Esprit and Mike's Europa. Others couldn't make it for one reason or another…but the Mall start location drew several admirers and gawkers. After we froze our tushes off waiting for the assemblage to get together, we finally departed into the relative warmth of our cars.

A few miles down the road, the tone of the trip was set as we discovered a stop was necessary to replace the batteries in the FRS radios. That done, we stopped again a few miles down the road after hitting some traffic. Shortly though, we were among the railroad tunnels of the Lackawanna (railroad) Cutoff, sailing through the county routes, mindful that our performance tires were on the cold side, and that drifting out of our lanes would put us on the cinders. Then there was the bright, cold November sun to contend with, either for the oncoming local cars or us. So it wasn't our fastest-ever trek through the Pequest Valley.

Despite our cautions (and a few stops to regroup after a few of us left the specified route) we got back to the end-point in enough time to take a quick tour of our daughter's newly built house overlooking the valley.
